Sun Life building
Description | Neighbourhood : Downtown Type : Interesting building Year of construction : 1914-1931 Style : Beaux-arts Best : NA
The Sun Life building was built in stages, on the location of the old YMCA (a beautiful castle-like building that was demolished to make way for this building). The base was built in 1913 and the central section was built between 1927 and 1933. At the time, it was the tallest building in the british commonwealth and it was the center of the new downtown which then moved from what is now known as old Montreal close to the golden square mile. It was, at a certain time, use to dock dirigeables (aka zeppelins). Its "pyramid" shape is due to a municipal bylaw at the time which dictated that the upper floors of tall buildings should be withdrawn from its base (that shape can be found in other older skyscrapers).
