Square Phillips
Description | Neighbourhood : Downtown Type : Park or cemetery Year of construction : N/A Style : N/A Best : NA
The lot onto which the square was built was given by the Phillips family (hence the name) and it was stipulated that it would only be used as a park... fortunatly for montrealers because last year, the city wanted to tear it down and dig an underground parking lot. The impressive statue of King George was donated by the Birks family (of the Birks jewelry store). The Phillips square is important in Montreal's commercial evolution because the commercial district use to be located near old Montreal (Victoria square) but when Morgan established it store to the north of the square in 1891 (now The Bay) ans Birks decided to move its store to Ste-Catherine street in 1894, it opened the way for Ste-Catherine to become the main commercial artery of the city. The square is now use by office workers in the summer as a place to eat lunch or just relax. There are also street musicians and people selling handmade jewelry in the square.
