Mont-Royal cemetery

The Mont-Royal cemetery is a protestant cemetery on the north-eastern side of the Mont-Royal. It is not as large as the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery to the west but it is more beautiful (in parts). There are many different sections in the cemetery, the oldest and by far most interesting is the eastern section (to the left of the main gate). That section is full of various trees and flowers and it is very well maintained. There's even a little stream going through the cemetery and then goes under Mont-Royal blvd. and surfaces in a nearby backyard (you can see it if you go to the back of Oakwood park on Roskilde street near the corner of Mont-Royal blvd. and Spring Grove), it crosses a couple of other backyards (there residents added some flowers and plants around the stream so it's really worth a look) and winds up between two houses on Maplewood street near the corner of McCulloch.

There's another section called Montain view and Mount Murray (to the west or to the right of the main gate) which is more recent and not as nice. There's a a good view of east Montreal form the top of the Mountain view (altough the same view from the Camillien-Houde lookout is much nicer). That section of the cemetery is more "international", there are greek, romanian and chinese tombs, some of them are even laid out in circles.

There are many well known politicians and financiers buried there including :
  • John Molson, of the Molson brewery empire (lot C-62)
  • John Abbott, canadian prime minister (lot C-395)
  • John Redpath, of the Redpath sugar (lot L-1)
