Family friendly Montreal

Most family-oriented activities are centered around three districts : the old port in old Montreal, the Parc Jean-Drapeau (Ile Ste-Hélène and Ile Notre-Dame) and the "Pôle Maisonneuve". The activities in the old port are :
  • Hangar 16 Labyrinth, a giant maze where your kids can get lost (Quai de l'Horloge pier).
  • Jetboating and rafting, you can ride the Lachine rapids in a large power boat.
  • Montreal Science Center and IMAX, it's a scientific exhibition with interactive kiosks, you can also see a movie at the giant IMAX theater (King-Edward pier).
  • Rollerblading or cycling, you can rent rollerblades or bicycles to be used in the old port or for a long ride alongside the Lachine canal (west of the old port).
  • Cruises on the St-Laurent river, there's also an Amphi-Bus that can float on water and do a tour of old Montreal.
  • For more information, check out the old port's web site.

The "Pôle Maisonneuve" (aka Hochelaga-Maisonneuve) is basically everything around the Olympic stadium (Pie-IX and Viau metro stations). The Biodôme de Montréal, it shows four different working ecosystems. (it's kind of a zoo but with four working ecosystems) and the Insectarium (do you know a kid that does not like bugs?) are the most interesting for kids. You can also visit the Olympic stadium and its tower. For more information, check out the Olympic park's web site.

The Ile Ste-Hélène (Ile Ste-Hélène metro station or via the Jacques-Cartier bridge) has the La Ronde amusement park, the old Fort and the David M. Stewart Museum that have live shows with 17th centry soldiers and the Biosphère, a museum about the water ecosystem and the St-Laurent river. There's also an artifical beach (the Parc Plage or Plage Doré) at Ile Notre-Dame behind the Casino.

There are also two other science museums downtown that could be interesting : the Planétarium de Montréal-Dow Planetarium (about space and the stars) and the Redpath museum museum of natural history (old bones and fossils).
