En une phrase : expensive thai with vegetarian 'meat'.
Critique : This restaurant's specialty is vegetarian meat (imitation meat made from tofu or gluten) and thai cuisine. One of the first thing that struck me when looking at the menu were the prices, the main dishes alone are between $15 and $20 each. But there are two table d'hote for $30 and $40 per person which include a sampling of appetizers and a choice of main dishes. We tried the $30 table d'hote. The appetizers included a spring roll (very peperry), crispy seaweed and basil (the best one), a pastry filled with spicy potatos, some dumplings in peanut sauce (the most disappointing, too bland), a crispy soy patty and a tiny salad. There was a choice of five main dishes, we tried the 'shrimp' with coconut milk and basil and the beef with potatoes and carrots in a peanuty sauce. The 'beef' was excellent, a little rubbery but it almost tasted like the real thing and the sauce was very creamy. The texture of the shrimps on the other hand was too much like uncooked dough so I wouldn't recommend it. As for the portions, they were certainly enough for a big meal including the choice of desert (the cheese cake was OK as were the lychees) and coffee or tea. The best thing about this table d'hote was being able to sample all these different entrees but I still find it a little too expensive for what we got.
There's another restaurant next door called Chuch which basically serves the same food but the decor is more like a cafeteria and I suppose it is cheaper. Maybe check out Chuch instead to get an impression before paying the big bucks for Chu Chai.
P.S. Reservations are recommended.
