En une phrase : great burgers.
Critique : There are two places in Montreal that have a reputation for great burgers : this restaurant and La Paryse. What makes a hamburger great? Certainly a combination of things : bread, meat, trimmings, etc! All obvious but most places don't even know have good basic ingredients or don't know how to put them together, as a result they all taste the same. Here it's different.
The most interesting things about their burgers is the bread (between a kaiser roll and a croissant) and the fresh garnishes (fresh mushrooms, fresh lettuce and not iceberg lettuce either, fresh... everything), real cheese (swiss aka ementhal) and fresh meat (!). The only down side is the price, around $5.00 just for the burger. The fries were good, but I've had better (they make a point or writing in the menu that they are fried in peanut oil). They also serve fresh vegetable and fruit juices (I tried the carrot/celery/apple combination, I should have said hold the apple but I guess some people would like it) which complements nicely the burger and is a good alternative to the typical soft drink. If you are wondering about the difference between this place and La Paryse, their burger is bigger and they have more specialty burgers (with cream cheese, etc) but L'Anecdote seems fresher.
As for the decor, it's like a neighborhood restaurant with 1930's and 40's pictures and al. but it needs some sprucing up (I know stucco is hard to wash but...). It was rather trendy for a while, but now it feels more like a local hangout with a few hamburger connaisseurs here and there. The service is a little like the clientele, relaxed. So don't waste your money at a fast-food place, make a detour and sample some real burgers.
It seems like someone there read my review because since my first visit, they redid the decor. It looks much cleaner now.
