The Montreal Hotel de Ville (city hall) was first build between 1872 and 1878 but was heavily damaged by a fire in 1922. It was subsequently rebuilt in 1923 and officialy inaugurated in 1926. Only the walls of the first four floors were kept as they were before the fire but a fifth floor was added at roof level. The hotel de ville is still used for its original function as Montreal's city hall and can be visited. The city council sessions are open to the public and are usually held on Monday nights starting at 19:00.
