Champs-de-Mars
Description | Neighbourhood : Old Montreal Type : Park or cemetery Year of construction : 1812 Style : N/A Best : NA
Located behind city hall, it is where you can see the remnants of the old fortifications that use to surround what is now known as old Montreal. The fortifications (two twenty-feet walls separated by an empty space) were demolished in 1820 because they were not useful anymore and the city had expanded beyond the walls. The Champs-de-Mars was used as a public market, a parking lot, a field for military exercices and now it is a green space and its name designates a public space used for military, political and religious purposes (the name comes from the romains). You can also see Montreal's declaration of tolerance near the stairs leading to Place Vauquelin (between city hall and the old court house). | Contact and location | Address : behind the city hall, west of Gosford Metro station: Champs-de-Mars Tel. : Email : Website :
