Built between the year 1675 untill 1678, this church was the idea of Mother Bourgeoys or Marguerite Bourgeoys promoter of the Notre-Dame congregation. This church played an important role in the evolution of the history of Montreal, at the times the city was called Ville-Marie. This church became a real pilgrimage center in north america and was said to have a miraculous statue of the virgin mary. Many seaman would come and thank the virgin for not having drown on their way to New France.
This church was built in wood at first untill 1659 (aproximatly because historians don't agree on this one : they don't agree on the inauguration, and they don't agree on the stone construction dates of this church). Talking about stone, it's the first stone church of Montreal. This church was completely destroyed by flames in 1754, but construction continued in 1771. The inauguration of this church was the 30 of june ot 1773. This church is oriented towards the street not towards the river as opposed to its near neighbour the Marché Bonsecours. The building remains the same since 1773 and is also the home of the Marguerite Bourgeoys museum.
