Archeology and History Museum of Montreal (Pointe-a-Calliere)

Description
Neighbourhood : Old Montreal
Type : History

It's an history/archeology museum built on top of the remains of historical buildings and important historical sites (it's also the actual spot where the founders of Montreal first landed and it's also the first cemetery). The museum continues under de la Commune street (a small river use to run between the Place Royale and the Pointe-à-Callière, you still can see parts of the large pipe used to channel the water from that river) and the Place Royale under which you can see part of the fortification wall and the old Place Royale. It ends up in the old Customs house where there are other exhibitions. It gives a good idea on the different stages of evolution that Montreal went through. If you can, wait for a guided tour, the information presented can be a little dry and the guided tour makes it even more interesting. There are some temporary exhibitions on the second floor and a special christmas exhibition every year. Don't forget to visit all the parts of the museum, the second part under the Place Royale with it's interactive characters is very interesting and there's a good restaurant and observation deck on the third floor of the first part of the museum (the triangle-shaped building). By the way, the exit is through the gift shop of the old Customs house (it took me a while to find it). N.B. This museum could be a little dull for young children.
